Abstract

The artisanal squid fishery in the Azores started to expand in the late 1970s. Landings reached a maximum in 1989 at 473 t, which also corresponded to a maximum economic yield. In the early 1990s the landings decreased. The most important fishing season occurs from November to February, followed by a second one in May and June. Small open boats (normally 5–10 m) equipped with homemade jigs are used in the fishery. Crew size varies between 1 and 7 (mean 3.15). Yield is proportional to the fishing effort (number of fishermen per year). Catch-per-unit-effort (kilograms per fisherman per day) shows an increase during the first 6 years of the 1980s in four harbours studied, with a maximum of 27.5 kg per man day−1 in 1986.
